AI can help teams write more code. That is useful, but it is not the same thing as building better software.

That means defining how AI should be used in the development lifecycle. Where is it encouraged? Where does it need review? What kinds of tasks are good candidates for agentic assistance? What standards should generated code follow? How should pull requests disclose or explain AI-assisted changes? What policies apply to sensitive code, data, and customer environments? How do teams measure whether AI is improving delivery quality, not just increasing activity?
These questions are not blockers. They are enablers.
Good guardrails make adoption easier because developers do not have to guess what is acceptable. Teams can move faster because they have shared expectations. Leaders can support innovation without pretending risk does not exist. This is also where platforms matter. If AI usage is disconnected from the places where software work happens, it becomes harder to govern and measure. If AI assistance is integrated into repositories, pull requests, workflows, security findings, and deployment processes, teams have a better chance to use it responsibly and consistently.
That is one of the reasons GitHub is such an important part of the agentic software development conversation. It is not just about individual developer assistance. Organizations need engineering leaders who can set direction. They need senior developers who can model good practices. They need security and platform teams who can create paved roads. AI can help with the repetitive work, the first draft, the explanation, the boilerplate, the test generation, the summarization, and the workflow scaffolding. Humans still own the judgment.
